Read by Cheiro
Mark Twain
Cheiro read his hand in the 1890s and later corresponded with him about the markings on his life line.
What's actually documented
Cheiro kept a guest book of sitters, each asked to sign their name beside a comment on the reading. Twain — no easy mark for a showman — wrote one anyway.
“Cheiro has exposed my character to me with humiliating accuracy. I ought not to confess this accuracy, still I am moved to do so.”
Mark Twain, in Cheiro's guest book
The line comes from Cheiro's own memoirs — his account of the sitting, not an independent record.
